Wichita Thunder News Release
Wichita, KS - The Thunder used a five-goal second period to blow past the Tulsa Oilers on Saturday night, winning 8-2 at INTRUST Bank Arena. RG Flath, Matt Summers and Gregor Hanson each had four points to pace the Thunder to their first win of the season. Wichita evens the season-series with the Oilers at one win apiece.
Tulsa scored first for the second-straight game when Matt Register stepped into the play at the Thunder line and put a wrister past Thunder goalie Torrie Jung to make it 1-0 at 9:04. It didn't take long, however, for the Thunder to answer and it happened in a big way with eight unanswered goals. Gregor Hanson, Matt Summers and RG Flath all contributed on the first three Thunder tallies. Hanson scored his first of the night at 10:53 when Summers made a nice play to draw the defenseman to him on a two-on-one break and Hanson found the back of the net. At 12:18, Flath gave the Thunder their first lead of the season after catching another beautiful feed from Summers to make it 2-1.
The onslaught continued in the second period as five different players scored. Summers (2) got on the board at 4:09 on a delayed penalty as he picked a Hanson pass out of the air and beat Oilers goalie Ian Keserich to make it 3-1. Flath (3) found the back of the net for the second time in the contest at 6:27. Dave Inman (1) made it 5-1 at 14:04. Matt Tassone got into the act with his second on the season at 17:19. Gregor Hanson's second goal of the game closed out the second period drudging at 18:30 to make it 7-1.
In the third, Jarred Mohr's (1) goal at 4:59 capped off a run of eight-straight tallies by the Thunder and won going away by the final of 8-2. Jung earned his first win of the season, making 24 saves on 26 shots. The line of Flath, Summers and Hanson combined for 12 points, 10 shots on net and a +7. Wichita went 2-for-4 with the man advantage while Tulsa went 0-for-1.
The Thunder will travel to Bloomington, IL for a pair of games with the Blaze on Friday, October 26th and Saturday, October 27th. It will be the first time the two teams have seen each other in franchise history. To close out the road trip, the Thunder will head north to take on the Quad City Mallards on Sunday, October 28th.
