Thunder keep coming back, knock off Spartans, 49-44

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Calvin Thomas rushed for 81 yards and four touchdowns in his first appearance of the season as the Daytona Beach Thunder defeated the Augusta Spartans 49-44 in an American Indoor Football League game Saturday before 3,776 at PBS 15 Field in the Ocean Center.

The Thunder (5-4) erased deficits of 13-0 and 19-7, taking a 28-26 lead on Thomas' 14-yarder with 13:35 remaining in the third quarter. Daytona Beach forced four Augusta (2-6) turnovers as it built its lead to 49-32 on Oscar Davenport's 13-yarder to Robert Bailey with 12:45 to play.

Augusta closed to 49-44 on Morris Drakeford's 14-yarder from Anthony Young with five seconds to play, but the Thunder recovered the onside kick to preserve the victory.

Oscar Davenport threw for three touchdowns, two to Robert Bailey and one to Kwasie Kwaku.

For Augusta, Stone threw for 213 yards and four touchdowns. Drakefore had seven catches for 83 yards, and Young caught five passes for 84 yards and two scores before moving to quarterback after Stone's injury.
