March 13, 2014 - SPHL (SPHL)
Bloomington Thunder News Release
The Bloomington Thunder hang on to Southern Professional Hockey League playoff hopes as they enter a three-game weekend series at U.S. Cellular Coliseum that features special St. Patrick's Day activities and jerseys.
The Thunder carry an 18-30-2 record with 38 points into the three contests against the Huntsville Havoc (28-28-4, 60 points), who are tied for third in the SPHL standings as they jockey for playoff seeding. With six games remaining, the Thunder are in tenth place and nine points out of the only remaining President's Cup playoff spot currently held by the Mississippi Surge. The Thunder's elimination number is three, which is any combination of points missed by the Thunder and points earned by the Surge.
The Thunder have picked up defenseman Brad Barber off waivers from the Surge, where he earned three assists and 34 penalty minutes with a minus-5 rating in 27 games. The Thunder also signed rookie defenseman Billy Miller, who completed a 79-game career at NCAA Division III Westfield State University with five goals and 33 assists for 38 points with 39 penalty minutes. The Thunder waived defensemen Marcus Mitchell and Craig Cole. Mitchell collected three assists and 17 penalty minutes with a minus-5 rating in nine games while Cole did not record a point with 11 penalty minutes and a minus-5 rating in 12 games.
Game times are 7:05 p.m. Friday and Saturday with a 3:05 p.m. face-off on Sunday. This is the Havoc's first trip to Bloomington, and they have defeated the Thunder in all three previous meetings earlier this month in Huntsville. The Thunder have lost six of their last eight contests while the Havoc ended a five-game winning streak with a loss and an overtime loss against Knoxville last weekend.
Friday is Pepsi Date Night with two lower end tickets for only $20 when bringing a Pepsi product to the U.S. Cellular Coliseumm box office. Saturday is the St. Patrick's Day celebration with special jerseys worn by the Thunder to be auctioned immediately after the game, plus kids 12 and under eat free (hot dogs, corn dogs, popcorn, nachos and fries) until the first Thunder goal courtesy of SERVPRO. Sunday is Kids Day with $5 tickets for those 12 and under and $3 kids meals, plus a post-game skate with the team for all ages.
Games can be heard on WJBC.com and on 93.7 FM inside U.S. Cellular Coliseum and viewed via subscription on America One. Links to the audio and video broadcasts and other team information are on www.bloomingtonthunder.com, Facebook and Twitter (BLMThunder). Group discounts are available by calling the Thunder office at 309-434-2980 and single-game tickets are available through the U.S. Cellular Coliseum box office.
