Pensacola Ice Flyers News Release
COLUMBUS, GA. (March 13, 2014) - The Pensacola Ice Flyers made their only appearance of the 2013-14 regular season in Columbus, Georgia tonight and came out with a 5-0 drubbing of the Columbus Cottonmouths. The win was fueled by two-point nights from five different players.
Pensacola got opened the scoring when Adam Pawlick netted a goal 13 seconds past the midway point of the first period just after a power play for the Ice Flyers expired. Jeremy Gates and Steve Whitely had the assists on the goal in the first game back with the Ice Flyers. Pawlick struck again, this time a great individual effort, a little over four minutes later to make it 2-0. Whitely picked up a goal of his own when he went top shelf on a 3-on-2 rush. Ryan Salvis and John Dunbar assisted on the goal that came with 3:16 remaining in the first.
Pensacola dominated the second period of play, out shooting Columbus 15-5. Despite the dominance by the Ice Flyers, the second period was mostly scoreless. Then with 5:05 remaining in the period, Podge Turnbull picked up a rebound in the slot and fired a quick shot that Columbus' Andrew Loewen couldn't get back in time to stop. Corey Banfield and Joe Caveney assisted on the goal.
Pensacola pushed the lead to 5-0 not even five minutes into the third thanks to a goal by John Dunbar. Ryan Salvis picked up the lone assist on the tally. Dunbar's goal proved to be the final nail in the Snakes' coffin and the Ice Flyers won the game 5-0.
Ross MacKinnon stopped all 25 of Columbus' shots to pick up his third shutout of the season. Pensacola swept the three stars with Dunbar being number three, MacKinnon second, and Pawlick being named the number one star.
The Ice Flyers return to the Pensacola Bay Center, for the first time since Feb. 20, tomorrow night as they take on the Peoria Rivermen. It's Faith & Family Night in the Hangar and puck drop is slated for 7:05 p.m. Central.
