
Thunder Edged in 15-Round Shootout

WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Thunder lost 3-2 in a shootout to the Mississippi RiverKings at the INTRUST Bank Arena on Wednesday night.
Louis Dumont beat Marc-Antoine Gelinas with a wrist shot in the shootout's 15th round to give Mississippi a 4-3 lead. RiverKings' goaltender Alexandre Pechurskiy then stopped Troy Schwab to finish the win. Twice, the Thunder scored when down to its final chance to extend the shootout. In the fifth round, Bobby Hughes tied it at 2-2 with a wrist shot past Pechurskiy. Aaron Davis delivered a similar clutch goal in round seven.
Jesse Bennefield scored a pair of goals over the first two periods, helping Wichita build a 2-0 lead. With the Thunder on a power play in the first, Schwab made an outlet pass from center ice that Bennefield picked up along the right side of the RiverKings' blue line. Bennefield worked towards the net before ripping a low slapshot from the right circle that found its way under the pads of Pechurskiy at 8:18.
At 4:49 in the second, Bennefield buried a perfect centering pass from Schwab to make it 2-0 Wichita. The RiverKings rattled off consecutive power play goals from Nathan Lutz at 10:15 and Matt Summers at 17:01 to tie the game. Lutz scored on a re-directed shot from the point that squeezed over the shoulder of Gelinas. Summers game-tying goal came on a rebound at the top of the crease.
Gelinas was 24 of 26 in regulation and overtime in the loss. Pechurskiy earned the win, saving 28 of 30. The Thunder was 1 for 6 on the power play while Mississippi was 2 for 6.
