Berlin Thunder News Release
TWO members of a Berlin Thunder team that recorded a 24-15 victory over the Rhein Fire on Saturday night have been rewarded with Player of the Week honors.
Wide receiver AARON BOONE (Carolina Panthers) was named Offensive Player of Week 7 as he caught 8 passes for 112 yards (45 long) and scored the games opening touchdown on a 5-yard reception from quarterback Dave Ragone (Houston Texans).
Through seven games this season, Boone who won a World Bowl ring with the Thunder in 2004 has caught a team-leading 26 passes for 363 yards and 3 touchdowns.
Boone said: Coach (Rick Lantz) told me that with this being my second year, I needed to step up with (wide receiver) Michael Jennings down with an injury today. Fortunately, I was able to do that and we got on a little bit of a roll.
German defensive end CHRISTIAN MOHR who was allocated to NFL Europe by the Seattle Seahawks was named National Player of Week 7 as he registered 5 tackles, 1 sack and 1 forced fumble while helping Berlin improve to a league-leading 5-2 record.
Mohr, who has recorded 16 tackles, a team-leading 3 sacks and 2 forced fumbles this season, said: I was happy with my own performance but it was really the whole defense that came together. I am making progress but I know that I have to keep working hard.
Once this season is over my goal is to go to training camp with Seattle and win a roster spot, but right now I am not thinking beyond our last three games of the year. I want a successful end to the season with the Thunder and to become a better player.
Defensive Player of the Week honors went to Hamburg Sea Devils safety SHAWN MAYER (Atlanta Falcons) who tied the NFLEL single-game record with 3 interceptions for 36 yards during his teams 30-24 overtime defeat of the Amsterdam Admirals. His interception total matched a feat achieved on eight previous occasions in the NFL Europe League.
Mayer added 7 tackles during a game that saw quarterbacks from both teams combine to throw a league record 10 interceptions. The Falcons-allocated defensive back now leads NFL Europe with 5 interceptions for 48 yards and has added 31 tackles, 7 pass break-ups and a forced fumble.
Sea Devils head coach JACK BICKNELL said: We had some very important and outstanding performances tonight. I thought Shawn Mayer played extremely well and was a big factor in us winning the game.
Mayer added: Interception-wise, it was a great game for me personally. I have some little things to improve on but it was a solid performance and we won thats what its all about.
Cologne kicker JIMMY KIBBLE was named Special Teams Player of the Week after his 37-yard effort with 1:14 remaining in overtime gave the table-topping Centurions a 20-17 victory over the Frankfurt Galaxy.
After landing his game-winner in rainy, slippery conditions, Kibble said: I just kept thinking, Dont slip. (Center) Mike Mabry and (holder) Kevin Thompson, and the offensive line, are the ones who gave me the shot to kick it. For me it was just a case of doing what I do.
Kibble also converted a 43-yard field goal and 2 of 2 PATs. He has successfully kicked 13 of 15 field goals this season and ranks third in NFL Europe with 53 points.
