STOCKTON, Calif. - Andy Contois broke a 2-2 tie scoring a power play goal with 4:27 remaining in regulation and the Stockton Thunder went on to defeat the Phoenix RoadRunners 6-2 before 6,063 at Stockton Arena in ECHL action Saturday.
Stockton (11-14-2) opened the scoring at 17:55 of the first period when Geoff Paukovich re-directed Mark Adamek's shot from the right point behind RoadRunners' goalie Dave McKee for a 1-0 lead.
Phoenix (9-13-5) would counter early in the second when all-star Brian Yandle beat Stockton goalie Tim Boron with a one-time slap shot from the center blue line at 8:17 to tie the game at 1-1. But the Thunder would re-gain the upper hand with a power play goal at 11:38 as Ryan MacMurchy flipped the puck behind McKee from top of the crease giving Stockton a 2-1 advantage at the end of two periods.
The RoadRunners would continue to fight in the third period and eventually tied the contest at 2-2 when Sean O'Connor lifted a backhand shot past Boron at 12:42 on a two-man advantage power play. But Contois scored the go-ahead and eventual game-winning goal stuffing the puck through McKee at 15:33 on the power play. Jacob Micflikier, Jonas Almtorp, and Brandon Schwartz each scored goals at 19:22, 19:33 and 19:59 respectively to seal the Thunder win.
Phoenix out-shot Stockton 35-33. McKee stopped 27 shots as he fell to 2-3-2 on the season. The RoadRunners went 2-7 on the power play while Stockton was 2-4 with the man-advantage.
Notes: Sisca registered his team-leading ninth multiple-point game of the season with a pair of assists and currently riding a four-game assist streak dating back to Dec. 14...Phoenix out-shot an opponent for the first time since out-shooting Las Vegas 38-35 on Nov. 11...The RoadRunners and the rest of the ECHL will enjoy a league-wide holiday break beginning tomorrow through Wednesday.
Phoenix returns to US Airways Center at 7:11 p.m. Thursday as they welcome the Bakersfield Condors to kick-off a four-game home-stand.
