Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

The Victoria Salmon Kings and the Alaska Aces squared off tonight for the final game of a three game set in Victoria. Alaska took game one from the Kings on Wednesday night with a 4-3 shootout victory. Victoria responded with their most offensive effort of the season on Friday night winning 8-1. Goaltender Kris Tebbs saw his first action of the series tonight for the Aces while Billy Thompson got the start in net for the Kings.

Alaska found the back of the net early as Vladamir Novak put his fourth goal of the season behind Thompson at the 6:53 mark of the first period. Bo Cheesman and Dave Pszenyczny drew the assists.

Alaska opened the second period similar to how they started the first, scoring two minutes into the frame. Lee Green stepped over the blue line and fired a dump-in towards the net which fooled Thompson and gave Green his first goal of the season and Alaska a two goal lead. The two straight goals saw Julien Ellis replace Billy Thompson in the Kings net.

Midway through the period it was the Salmon Kings special teams that took over as Ryan Wade blasted his fifth of the season behind Tebbs on a 5-on-3 power play to cut the Aces lead to one. Four minutes later, Marc-Andre Bernier notched his 11th goal of the season on the man advantage to tie the game 2-2.

With only seven seconds left in the period, Wes Goldie showed incredible persistence on the power play recovering the puck behind the net and scoring a goal off the back of Tebbs to give the Kings a 3-2 lead after 40 minutes of play.

The Aces would tie up the game with a power play marker of their own at the 8:58 mark of the third period. Matt Robinson finished off a nice passing play firing a shot over the shoulder of Ellis, good for his fifth goal of the season.

The second half of the period saw both teams with some quality scoring chances but Ellis and Tebbs were equal to the task making some timely saves to send the game to overtime. Both teams got one shot on net in the extra frame but neither got behind the goaltenders as the game was sent the distance to the shootout.

In the shootout, both Ellis and Tebbs remained perfect through seven rounds of shooters. In the eighth round it was Aces defenseman Peter Metcalf who blasted a slap shot low past Ellis to give Alaska the 4-3 shootout victory.

The Salmon Kings went 3-9 (33.3%) on the power play and finished the game with a total of 39 shots on net. Alaska had 24 shots after 65 minutes of play and went 1-3 (33.3%) with the man advantage. Attendance for the game was 5,513, marking the fourth consecutive game with more than 5,000 fans at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre. The next game for the Salmon Kings is December 28th when the team travels to Stockton to take on the Thunder.
