Daytona Beach Thunder News Release
DeLAND, Fla. - It's a preseason intrasquad scrimmage with a sibling rivalry angle when the Daytona Beach Thunder takes the action to Spec Martin Stadium on Saturday, February 11 at 11 a.m.
Admission is free and the public is invited. There will be t-shirt giveaways and appearances by members of the Lightning dance team.
The action will be as close to an indoor game as possible. The Thunder's practice system, featuring inflatable walls, will be transported from Daytona Beach to DeLand and the scrimmage will be conducted under full game conditions.
Head Coach Ervin Bryson and Assistant Coach Monteray Evans, who are brothers, held their draft for Saturday's teams and have the sibling thing going, including some intense betting.
"Listen, that Pittsburgh Steeler suck-up cleaned my clock Sunday and I'm going to get even," Evans said. "Even though he's pulled rank and loaded his side of the roster, I'm going to have the last laugh."
Evans may actually have home field advantage. His team will consist of West Volusia products, including Dee Patrick (DeLand HS), RJ Simpson (DeLand HS, Eastern Kentucky, Tommy Moody (Taylor, Florida, NFL) and Robbie Reese (Taylor HS, Bethune-Cookman).
"Some things never change, I'm always the winner and he's always the loser,'' Bryson replied. "The only thing about him losing this time is that our mom won't be here to baby him after the spanking my team is going to give him."
Saturday's scrimmage will be the fourth day of the Thunder's pre-season training camp for its inaugural American Indoor Football League season that begins Feb. 26.
"It starts to get serious when you scrimmage," Bryson said. "That's going to add to the day - a player can get a job if he shines."
Holding an exhibition in DeLand is part of the Thunder's commitment to the west side of Volusia County.
"We've been thrilled with the interest and support we've had from DeLand, Deltona and DeBary,'' said Thunder owner/CEO Zack McDonald. "We want everyone to know that the Thunder is all of Volusia County's team. We look forward to seeing everyone Saturday."
