Wichita Thunder News Release

WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Thunder added some muscle to the roster today, signing defensemen Dave Starenky and Andrew Morris.

Starenky, a 6-3, 216-pound native of Calgary, Alberta joins the Thunder after spending the last two seasons in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). Starenky (pronounced stir-ENK-ee) notched three points and 126 penalty minutes last season in just 34 games, splitting time between the Saint John Sea Dogs and the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies. He also played for the Woodstock Slammers of the Maritime Junior "A" Hockey League last season, amassing 14 points and 60 penalty minutes in 15 games.

"David will bring a wealth of junior "A" experience to the team", said Thunder head coach Mark French. "He plays with an edge and will definitely add to our team toughness."

Prior to playing in the QMJHL, Starenky spent two seasons with the Alberta Junior Hockey League's (AJHL) Calgary Canucks, picking up 27 points and 380 penalty minutes in 92 games. Over his junior career he has totaled 46 points and 745 penalty minutes in 196 games.

Morris, a 6-3, 223-pound native of Hawkstone, Ontario joins the Thunder following a four-year career with Elmira College. Morris picked up 10 points and 48 penalty minutes in 26 games last season. His best season came in 2004-05, when he led all Elmira defensemen with 18 points in just 23 games. In 98 career college games, Morris picked up 13 goals and 51 points.

"Andrew is another player who likes to use his size", said French. "He also has good puck-handling skills with an offensive upside."

Morris was signed by the UHL's Elmira Jackals for the final two weeks of last season, but did not see any action due to delays obtaining a visa. Prior to attending Elmira College, Morris played for the Couchiching Terriers of the Ontario Provincial Junior Hockey League (OPJHL).

The 2006 CHL Most Improved Franchise, the Thunder will begin their 15th CHL season with a pair of home games on Friday, October 20th versus the Tulsa Oilers and Saturday, October 21st versus the Oklahoma City Blazers.
