Portland Thunder News Release
PORTLAND - The Portland Thunder have acquired rookie defensive back Qua Cox, head coach Andy Olson announced Tuesday afternoon.
Cox (6-0, 185, Jackson State) will enter his first season of AFL play with the Thunder in 2016, bringing previous NFL experience to Portland.
Cox comes to the Thunder after spending most of 2014 with the Indianapolis Colts. An undrafted free agent signing for the Colts in May of that year, Cox participated in all of Indianapolis' OTA's and mini-camps, as well as training camp, before being waived on August 25, 2014.
A four-year starter at Jackson State, Cox was named to The Sports Network's "Buck Buchanan Award" watch list (best FCS defensive player) for his senior season, after leading the SWAC with five interceptions and ranking third in the conference with 13 pass defenses in his junior year. Cox also finished fifth on the team in tackles, with 50, while also contributing five tackles for loss and 2.0 sacks in that same junior season. In total, he appeared in 44 games for the Tigers, starting 41 times from 2010 to 2013.
A native of Tuskegee, AL, Cox prepped as both a receiver and a defensive back at Booker T. Washington High School.
