There are few more challenging subjects for a photographer than a sporting event. And few more rewarding.

Brad Thyroff has been the team photographer for the Rochester RazorSharks basketball team since its inception. His work over the past five seasons is the subject of a slide show presentation he'll narrate this Friday evening at the Dryden Theater at the George Eastman House downtown.

"When I came into this I didn't know a lot about basketball," said Thyroff. "I've learned a lot about how to see plays. It's kind of like billiards, you see one, two, three, four shots ahead. In basketball I kind of anticipate shots now."

Thyroff began taking himself seriously as a photographer ten years ago.

"I took an eight week course and that helped me quite a bit. Then I started looking at posters hanging up around the city. I'd call the number on it and say, 'Hey, I'd love to shoot your event.' I just started shooting everything that I could."

Hired by the Sharks in 2005, Thyroff has collected thousands of images for the team. He has selected his favorites for the Eastman presentation.

"A friend of mine who was the head team photographer for the NFL's Philadelphia Eagles, took me to a game on the sidelines," said Thyroff. "He told me that he takes around three or 400 images, and he said if he gets a half a dozen that he likes, he's really happy. I thought he 'd tell me if half of them are good he'd be happy. Now I understand what he meant."

Five Years of RazorSharks - A Photographic Journey by Brad Thyroff is at the Dryden Theater at the George Eastman House Friday night beginning at 6:00pm. The presentation will be attended by the basketball team and be followed by a showing of the 2005 film 'Coach Carter' featuring Samuel L. Jackson.
