Threshers Drop Opener to Blue Jays, 3-1
July 5, 2022 - Florida State League (FSL)
Clearwater Threshers News Release
DUNEDIN, Fl - For the second time in less than one week, the Clearwater Threshers had a six-game series opener cut short by weather, as the Threshers fell to the Dunedin Blue Jays 3-1 in 6.5 innings on Independence Day at TD Ballpark. The contest was ruled official after the end of the top of the seventh due to wet grounds.
Right-hander Starlyn Castillo made his first start of the season on the mound for Clearwater, allowing three runs on four hits while walking two and striking out four in three innings of work.
The Threshers (2-8, 37-38) used three singles in the first from Leandro Pineda, Marcus Lee Sang, and an RBI base knock from Kendall Simmons to make it 1-0 early.
The Blue Jays (6-3, 34-41) responded immediately however, scratching across two runs in the home half of the first and one more in the third to grab a 3-1 advantage.
Left-hander Tristan Garnett and righty Victor Lopez combined to work three scoreless innings on the bump, allowing only one hit to keep the deficit at 3-1. The Threshers offense fell silent the rest of the way though, going 1-2-3 for five consecutive innings and mustering up only four hits in dropping a fourth straight game.
Following an off-day Tuesday, Clearwater returns to action on Wednesday night in Dunedin at 6:30 p.m. Right-hander Eiberson Castellano (1-1, 2.03 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Threshers, with coverage on the Threshers Broadcasting Network set to begin at 6:20 p.m.
