San Angelo Colts News Release
San Angelo, TX-The Colts continued to struggle Friday at Foster Field as three unearned runs, and a stiff Rio Grande Valley bullpen sent San Angelo to a 7-6 loss; their fifth defeat in their last seven games.
San Angelo started the scoring in the bottom of the first on an RBI double from first baseman Josh Collazo, which scored second baseman Mark Ramos from first. The Colts would add another run in the second on an RBI single from shortstop Butch Ballez to take a 2-0 lead.
The White Wings tied things up in the fourth on a two-run homerun from catcher Kevin Griffin, his first of the season. San Angelo would retake the lead on another RBI single from Ballez in the bottom half of the inning to make the score 3-2.
But Rio Grande Valley would come storming back in the fifth by scoring five runs, only two of which were earned. After a single and throwing error put runners at second and third to lead off the inning, centerfielder Javis Diaz tripled to right-center to score two runs and give the White Wings a 4-3 lead. After an RBI groundout by designated hitter Domenic Di Ricco scored Diaz, the White Wings started another rally on a walk to rightfielder Arlon Quiroz. Quiroz would then steal back-to-back bases, then score on a dropped fly ball by Colts rightfielder Adam Hale. The White Wings would then complete the scoring on an RBI single from Griffin and take a commanding 7-3 lead.
San Angelo used the long ball to get back into the game in the fifth. Collazzo belted his second homer of the year, a solo shot, to make the score 7-4. Later in the inning, leftfielder Jason Crosland hit a two-run shot (7) to cut the Rio Grande lead to one at 7-6.
But that was as close as the Colts got. The Rio Grande bullpen was sensational as Freddie Ballestas and Anderson Garcia combined to keep San Angelo scoreless the rest of the way. They held the Colts to only three hits over the final four innings with only one runner getting into scoring position.
Luis Montano (3-1) struggled but got the win for Rio Grande Valley by going five innings, while allowing six runs on 11 hits and striking out six. Aaron Cunningham (1-3) took the loss for the Colts going 4.2 innings while allowing seven runs, only four of which were earned on six hits. Garcia (3) notched the save for Rio Grande by pitching a scoreless ninth.
The Colts and White Wings will face off in game two of their four-game series tomorrow beginning at 7:05. Alex Morales (0-1, 8.10 ERA) will go for San Angelo against Misael DeJesus (0-1, 5.79 ERA) of the White Wings. Tomorrow is also Backpack Night presented by Bes-Tex as the first 1,000 fans will receive a free Colts backpack. Tomorrow is also Bring Home the W as all fans in attendance will receive a coupon to Whataburger should the Colts win. The game can be heard on 1260 KKSA, with the Kemps Pregame Show getting things started at 6:50.
Please note that due to an expected large crowd for tomorrow, the gates to Foster Field will open at 5:30 as opposed to their usual time of 6:05.
