Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
FORT MYERS -- Three runs wasn't enough Monday. After a three-run second inning highlighted by Danny Berg's two-RBI triple put Fort Myers on top, the Jupiter Hammerheads cobbled together four runs in the last three innings to take the series opener at Hammond Stadium 4-3.
In the seventh, Osvaldo Martinez lined an RBI single to make it 3-1. In the eighth, an RBI single from Brandon Tripp and a sac fly from Matt Dominguez tied it up. Finally, in the ninth, Greg Burns sliced a seeing-eye single through the left side of the infield with two outs for what would turn out to be the game-winner.
Blair Erickson (0-3) was saddled with the loss after allowing one earned run on two hits during one and two-thirds. Santos Arias surrendered three earned runs on five hits in two innings after Steve Hirschfeld started and scattered six hits through five and one-third, allowing no runs, walking two, and fanning three.
A.J. Battisto (3-1) got the win in relief for Jupiter. Kyle Gunderson got his second save against Fort Myers and seventh of the season.
Danny Berg and Jair Fernandez each went 2-for-4 in a losing effort.
Jupiter is now 6-4 against Fort Myers (41-26), making the Hammerheads (34-31) the only team in the Florida State League South to have posted a winning record against the first-half champs.
Elih Villanueva and Deolis Guerra will meet for the third time in Tuesday's game two at 12:05 p.m. on Big Splash Day.
