Daytona Tortugas News Release
Tampa, FL - Despite another stellar outing from RHP Jackson Stephens, the Daytona Tortugas (34-20) failed to sweep the Tampa Yankees (27-29, 61-65) with a 4-1 loss on Saturday night at Steinbrenner Field.
2B Ty Washington started the game with a double over third base, and scored three batters later on a soft liner to right from DH Daniel Pigott. The 1-0 lead would stand for only an inning; Home Run Derby Champion Miguel Andujar led off the second with a no-doubter to left and evened the score at 1-1.
Stephens and Chaz Hebert dueled from there, and the score remained tied over the next five innings. Stephens worked around five more hits and retired 10 of the last 12 batters he faced. Hebert went six innings and set down his last nine in a row, including 15 of the last 16 Tortugas he squared off against.
Tampa won the bullpen battle, which ultimately decided the game. Chance Adams struck out the first five batters he faced, and allowed just a single and a walk in 2.2 innings. RHP Evan Mitchell (L, 2-2) struggled for the first time since May, allowing three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Mitchell walked Jorge Mateo and Abiatal Avelino to start the decisive rally, then allowed an RBI single to Dustin Fowler that broke up the tie. Andujar knocked in his second run with a groundout to third, and Ericson Leonora made it 4-1 with a run-scoring single to left.
Daytona brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but Giovanni Gallegos (S, 4) struck out 3B Taylor Sparks to end the ballgame.
The Tortugas will travel to Clearwater for a three-game series -- and potential playoff preview -- with the Threshers at Brighthouse Field. LHP Nick Routt is scheduled to start Game 1, a Sunday matinee scheduled for 1:00 p.m. ET. Fans can listen to the action on AM 1230 and AM 1490 WSBB, starting with the D.B. Pickles Pregame Show at 12:50 p.m. ET.
