Three Rock Cats roster moves for September 5

September 5, 2009 - Eastern League (EL1)
New Britain Rock Cats News Release

New Britain, CT - The New Britain Rock Cats of the Eastern League announced three late season roster transactions today, three days shy of the close of the 2009 Regular Season. Two valuable players are departing New Britain - one temporarily and other, likely, for an extended period - while a promising left-handed Pitcher will be arriving today.

The associated details are as follows:

INF Luke Hughes, the 25-year-old native of Perth, Australia, has departed New Britain to join the Australian National Team at the 2009 World Baseball Cup competition in Europe. The 5'11"/190-pound Hughes was a productive performer for the Rock Cats over portions of three different Eastern League seasons (2007/08/09). A consistent fan favorite and a significant leader in the New Britain clubhouse, Hughes appeared in 56 games for the 2009 Rock Cats and leaves with a .250 BA for the current campaign. The MVP of the 2008 Eastern League All-Star Game, the high energy and versatile Hughes scored the winning run in last night's 8-7 victory over Trenton in what would be his final 2009 game in a Rock Cats uniform. He has been placed on the club's Temporary Inactive List.

LHP Spencer Steedley, a 24-year-old product of the University of Charlotte, has left the team to attend a family funeral in North Carolina. The southpaw reliever appeared in 19 games for New Britain this season, posting a 1-1 W-L record, with 1 Save and a 3.78 ERA. The 25th Round pick of the Minnesota Twins in the 2007 Draft will return to Connecticut early next week if the Rock Cats should earn a 2009 Playoff berth this weekend. In the meantime, he has been placed on the club's Bereavement List.

LHP Tony Davis, a 21-year-old product of the University of Florida, has joined the Rock Cats from Elizabethton in the Single-A, Appalachian League. The former Gator provides New Britain with a southpaw reliever should one be needed while Mr. Steedley is away. A 12th Round selection by Minnesota in the 2009 Draft, the 5'11'/185-pound Davis was 2-3-6 with a 5.35 ERA at Elizabethton. He will be in uniform for the Rock Cats tonight.
