Newark Bears News Release
NEWARK, N.J. -- Outfielders Danny Clyburn and Wil Quintana and pitcher David Moraga all agreed to terms with the Newark Bears, team Vice President/General Manager Chris Bryan announced. The trio joins a list of 11 who all have inked with the Atlantic League's defending champions in recent weeks.
"All three of these players are great additions to our team. Danny and Wil are both proven commodities in this league and David showed last year that he is a quality left-handed starter," Bryan said.
A second-round selection of the Pirates in the 1992 draft, Clyburn has played nine seasons of professional baseball. He spent part of the 1997 and '98 seasons in the major leagues with Baltimore and was a member of the Tampa Bay Devils in 1999, appearing in 28 games. After missing all of 2000 and 2001, he returned to baseball last summer, playing in 17 games and coming to bat 66 times for the Bears. A lifetime .273 hitter, Clyburn has played in 434 career games with 122 home runs and 490 RBI's. His best offensive output came in 1997 as a member of Baltimore's AAA affiliate in Rochester. The 6-foot-4, 220-pound Clyburn hit .300, smashed 20 home runs and registered 76 RBI's in 520 at-bats to earn a late season call up to the big leagues. The 29-year old currently resides in Lancaster, S.C.
A player who split time almost equally between Pennsylvania and Newark in 2002, Quintana had 215 at-bats with the Road Warriors and 217 with the Bears. All told, he hit 21 home runs and 72 RBI's to mark his best offensive campaign in a five-year professional career. A 15th-round selection of the Mariners in 1998 out of Indian Hills (Iowa) Community College, the Loiza, Puerto Rico resident is career .283 hitter with 55 homers and 234 RBI's in 327 games. The 24-year old Quintana spent time in both the Mariners' and Royals' chains before arriving in the Atlantic League last summer.
Moraga enters his tenth season in professional baseball and returns to Newark for a second go-around. The 6-foot, 180-pound southpaw won a team-best nine games during Newark's march to the Atlantic League title. In a career that has included time in the majors with both Montreal and Colorado, Moraga boasts a 63-58 record with a 3.77 ERA. He has struck out 641 batters and issued just 302 walks. The nine wins last season represented a career-best for the Suisun, Calif. native. The Sacramento City College product has spent time in the Expos, Rockies and Cubs' chains.
The Newark Bears compete in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. The Atlantic League consists of eight teams in five different states and enters its sixth season of competition on May 1. The team will be holding its first annual Fan Fest this coming Saturday April 5 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium. Admission is free and the event, which will be held in conjunction with a Blood Drive and Open Tryout, is open to the public. Single-game tickets are already on sale.
