Durham Bulls News Release
Durham, NC - Dustan Mohr, Justin Ruggiano, and Jonny Gomes all went deep for the Bulls in the bottom of the third inning, scoring the only runs needed to defeat the Louisville Bats 4-3 on Sunday evening at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
Trailing 2-0, Mohr's home run led off the third to pull the Bulls within one of the Bats. Two outs later with a runner on base, Ruggiano and Gomes came through with back-to-back home runs. Chris Dickerson's double in the top of the fourth scored Mark Bellhorn to make the score 4-3, but neither team scored again for the rest of the game.
The Bats took the early lead in the second when they scored two runs off RHP Tony Peguero. Peguero, who was making his first start of the year and first at the Triple-A level, lasted through 3 2/3 innings and gave up a total of three runs, three hits, and three walks with no strikeouts. LHP Jon Switzer relieved him and held the Bats scoreless despite giving up four hits and a walk in 1 2/3 innings. Ruddy Lugo replaced Switzer in the sixth inning and earned the win, pitching 2 2/3 innings and holding the Bats scoreless after giving up two hits and a walk. Seth McClung pitched a perfect ninth inning with two strikeouts to earn the save.
Kelly took the loss for the Bats, which was his second of the series after giving up the walk-off home run to Wes Bankston on Friday. He pitched five innings, allowing four runs and eight hits while striking out two. Josh Hamilton was the designated hitter and went 1-4 with a walk and a strikeout.
The Bulls and Bats will finish the four-game series on Monday afternoon at 1 PM at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. For tickets, go to www.durhambulls.com or call the box office at (919) 956-BULL.
