Edmonton Stingers News Release
EDMONTON, AB - After a 87-81 loss to the top-seeded Hamilton Honey Badgers on Saturday, the Edmonton Stingers will take home court three more times in the 2022 regular season. With a record 7-7, the Stingers sit in 5th place in the CEBL, with six total games left.
Their next contest will be against the Ottawa Blackjacks on Tuesday July 12. Despite a slow start to the season, the Blackjacks have rebounded in the second half of the summer, winning four of their last five games. They also took down the Stingers at home back on June 23rd, and with guard Kadre Grey returning to the lineup after leaving the Fraser Valley Bandits, look poised to make a late season push.
As host city for the 2022 Championship Weekend, Ottawa gets an automatic bid to the semi-final, but will want to hone momentum and chemistry in their last seven games. The consistent play of guard Walt Lemon Jr. helped propel the Blackjacks to a 101-50 victory over the Saskatchewan Rattlers on July 6th, a mark tied for the largest margin of victory in CEBL history (tied with the Stingers 51 point win over the Newfoundland Growlers on June 30th).
The Stingers find themselves fighting for post-season home court advantage. If Ottawa maintains the 8th seed, the 4th and 5th team will host the 7th and 6th team respectively in the play-in game (9th and 10th are eliminated entirely). The 2nd and 3rd place teams will get a bye to the quarterfinal where they will play the winner of the play-in games: both of the quarterfinal winners will join Ottawa and the 1st seed at Championship Weekend.
The Stingers record of 7-7 is tied with the Saskatchewan Rattlers, but the tie-breaker favours Edmonton due to total points. Former U of A Golden Bear still leads the team at 13.6 points per game, with Jordan Baker putting up 10.3 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game to complement his 11.8 points per game. Despite some recent shooting struggles (10-45 across the last two games) the Stingers looked refreshed and competitive on Saturday, and the two days rest will only heighten their energy against the visiting Blackjacks.
