
Three Breakers Named to U.S. Women's National Team Roster for the Algarve Cup

NEEDHAM, MA (February 27, 2003) - Boston Breakers Kristine Lilly, Kate Sobrero and Angela Hucles were named to the U.S. Women's National Team roster for the 2003 Algarve Cup, the most prestigious invitational women's soccer tournament in the world. The tournament is being held from Friday, March 14th-Thursday, March 20th along the southern coast of Portugal. The Breakers will also be without four other players - Dagny Mellgren, Ragnhild Gulbrandsen, Karina LeBlanc and Stéphanie Mugnert-Beghe - during preseason due to the tournament.
U.S. National Team coach April Heinrichs named 20 players to the roster for the tournament. The U.S. will open the Algarve Cup on Friday, March 14th against LeBlanc and her Canadian teammates. The second match will feature another battle of the Breakers' as Mellgren and Gulbrandsen will lead Norway against the U.S. on Sunday, March 16. The first-round action for the U.S. will end on Tuesday, March 18th against Sweden. The placement round will take place on Thursday, March 20th.
All three Breakers - Lilly, Sobrero and Hucles - played in the February 12th friendly match against Iceland. Lilly, who now has 245 caps, did not play in the Four Nations Tournament. Sobrero has been named to every roster since coming off her knee injury in May of 2002. She now has 87 caps. This will be the first Algarve Cup tournament for Hucles. She now has 14 caps, earning nine in the 2002 season.
Mellgren and Gulbrandsen just played in two friendly matches against Denmark in La Manga, Spain on February 17th and February 20th. LeBlanc is in Boston after training with Canada for a week in Florida. Mugneret-Beghe arrives in Boston on Saturday, March 1st and will train with the Breakers for a week before leaving to be with the French National Team for the tournament. All seven Breakers will meet up with the team in Las Vegas to play in the exhibition match against San Jose on March 22nd.
