Chicago Machine News Release
BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. (July 14, 2008) - Chicago Fire midfielder John Thorrington was voted the MLS Player of the Week for Week 16 for his game-winning goal in stoppage-time against Toronto FC at TOYOTA PARK on Saturday. This is the first career Player of the Week award for Thorrington.
Thorrington's goal in the 92+ minute helped Chicago end a five-game winless streak. Thorrington netted his fourth goal of the season on a give-and-go play with midfielder Justin Mapp, after receiving a cross from Cuauhtémoc Blanco. The victory was the first home win for Chicago since their 2-1 victory over Colorado on Saturday, April 26.
Thorrington became the second Fire player to earn Player of the Week honors this season. Earlier this year, Blanco was voted the MLS Player of the Week for Week 9 for his one goal, three assist effort in a 5-1 win over the New York Red Bulls at Giants Stadium.
