Portland Thorns FC begin play in the UKG Challenge Cup tonight on the road against San Diego Wave FC at Snapdragon Stadium; kickoff is set for 7 p.m. (Pacific) on Paramount+.
The 2023 UKG NWSL Challenge Cup tournament kicks off tonight, with weekly Wednesday night matches scheduled concurrently with the league's regular season and airing on Paramount+ and CBS Sports platforms. The tournament is split into three groups of four teams each, and each team will play a six-game double round-robin with its group. Following the group stage, the top team of each group and the highest-placing group runner-up advance to the single-elimination semifinals The tournament concludes with semifinals on Wednesday, September 6, and the final on Saturday, September 9.
Thorns FC will compete in the West Division with San Diego, OL Reign and Angel City FC, and will play each team twice - once home and once away. Portland won the 2021 NWSL Challenge Cup and has posted a record of 7-4-6 in the previous three years of the tournament. In 2022, Thorns FC did not advance to the semifinal round, but did earn two wins in the tournament against San Diego.
