Chesapeake Bayhawks News Release
DENVER, CO - Chesapeake traveled on a short week to Broncos Stadium at Mile High for the Denver Outlaws' Fourth of July game - a Major League Lacrosse tradition. Though the fireworks are normally the show in Denver, Lyle Thompson of the Bayhawks dazzled in a spectacular performance.
Thompson put on an offensive show with five goals and an assist for the Bayhawks. This output was not enough, however, as Chesapeake fell to Denver by a score of 14-13 in a game that was delayed three times by inclement weather. Attackman Steele Stanwick scored two goals and dished off two assists for the Bayhawks (now 2-2), but these also did not help hold a late lead against the defending MLL Champion Outlaws.
Goalkeeper Niko Amato made his presence known in the cage with 15 saves for the Bayhawks, who led by four early in the fourth quarter. Brendan Bomberryscored two goals while fellow first-year player Andrew Kew added a goal (the first of his career) and an assist.
"That was a tough one. Next time we need to finish," said Chesapeake Head Coach Dave Cottle. "We have to play better in the fourth quarter."
A dangerous hailstorm delayed the start of the game by over an hour while lightning and heavy rain caused additional delays in both the second and third quarters, resulting in the game ending at 11:20 PM local time.
