Duluth-Superior Dukes News Release

(Duluth, MN) Duluth-Superior Dukes closer turned starter, Travis Thompson, has been named to the Northern League Central All-Star team. Northern League Central All-Star manager, Winnipeg Goldeyes' Hal Lanier, announced the roster late last night.

Thompson, 27, is tied for third in the league in saves despite switching roles to begin the second-half as a starting pitcher. The former Colorado Rockies draft-pick is 3-2 with a 3.19 ERA in 19 games. He has allowed 2 ER in his two game starts this half, earning a 1-0 record and a 1.50 ERA.

"We are all very happy for Travis," said Dukes' field manager, Al Gallagher. "He deserves it as both a starter and a reliever."

The Colorado Rockies drafted Thompson in the 12th round of the 1996 draft. He played six years in the organization before joining the Dukes in May.

Thompson, a Milwaukee, WI native, began his career as a starting pitcher, but converted to a closer during the 1999 season, where became the league leader in saves (27).

Lanier named Thompson as the lone All-Star from the first-place Dukes, leaving RHP Julio Villalon, LHP Brian Ford and 3B Sean Murphy off the roster. Villalon is tied for first in the league in wins (7), second in strikeouts (71) and sixth in ERA (2.68).

Ford leads the league in ERA (1.67). He has not given-up an ER in 17 of his 22 appearances.

Murphy entered last night's game leading the league in doubles (19) and fourth in the league in batting average (.339).

Thompson and the rest of the Northern League Central All-Stars will face-off against the All-Stars from the Northern League East on August 6th at 7:30 p.m. ET in Quebec City, Quebec.
