East Kentucky Miners News Release
PIKEVILLE, KY. - The East Kentucky Miners professional basketball franchise is represented on the 2007-08 CBA All-Defensive Team. Miners forward Steve Thomas earned one of five spots on the All-Defensive Team, which was announced Wednesday. Thomas, who finished his college hoops career at Middle Tennessee State after playing at Georgia, made an immediate impact for the Miners following his signing with the Pikeville, Ky.-based CBA expansion team in the second half of the season. He joined the Miners following a stint with the Atlanta Krunk, another CBA expansion team. Thomas averaged a double-double of 16.6 points and 12.1 rebounds for the Miners. He ranked as the CBA's second-leading shot blocker, averaging 1.8 blocks per game.
"This is much-deserved recognition for Steve (Thomas)," said East Kentucky Miners Coach Kevin Keathley. "Steve is a player who doesn't take a defensive possession off. He will only get better as he learns the pro style more. His defensive rebounding instinct is something in the mold of a Dennis Rodman. Myself and the entire Miners organization couldn't be happier for Steve. He has a bright future in professional basketball ahead of him."
Oklahoma Cavalry forward Marvin Phillips was named the CBA Defensive Player of the Year for the 2007-08 season, as voted on by the 10 CBA head coaches.
Phillips averaged 10.0 rebounds a game, third-best in the CBA. He also averaged a block and a steal a game for National Conference runner-up Oklahoma.
Joining Phillips and Thomas on the CBA All-Defensive Team are Minot guard Ronnie Fields, Yakama forward Harvey Thomas and Minot forward Sidney Holmes.
