This week with the St. Louis Steamers

January 13, 2005 - Major Indoor Soccer League 2 (MISL 2)
St. Louis Steamers News Release

The St. Louis Steamers move into first place after victories in Milwaukee and over Chicago.

If Sunday's collision between the Steamers and Chicago Storm was any indication, another great St. Louis-Chicago rivalry has begun. With only 18 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter and the score tied at six, Steamers forward Aaron Susi (left) scored the game winning goal off pass from Daryl Doran (right), who held off three Storm defenders to find Susi open in front of the goal.

The Steamers stunned the Storm with two rare shorthanded goals early in the second quarter. Steamers defender Matt Caution (right) scored the first of those, assisted by Mali Walton, just 44 seconds into the second. Midfielder Jeff DiMaria (left) scored the second shorthanded goal 39 seconds later with Phillips getting the assist. Matthew Stewart scored for Chicago at 4:37 of the second, assisted by Jorge Valle, to put the Storm back on top, 3-2. Gus Karteroulots put Chicago up by two with an unassisted goal at 6:25. Chicago held the 4-2 lead at the half.

Although the game was over, the action wasn't. Immediately after the final whistle, a melee broke out on the field and the officials issued six red cards; three to each team. Chicago's Byron Alvarez, Mark Ughy and Tijani Ayegbusi along with St. Louis' Matt Caution, Brett Phillips and Mali Walton were identified by the officials as having commited "violent conduct". Players receiving red cards will face a one-game suspension, but that can be increased pending league review.
