ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The U.S. National Under-17 Team fell to the first-place Alpena IceDiggers tonight by a count of 4-3 at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube.

Through the opening two periods Team USA carried the play and built a three-goal lead after two periods, but Alpena was able to mount a three goal third period to earn the victory.

USA's first goal came 4:47 into the game when Kevin McCarey (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) buried a feed from Colin Reddin (Corona Del Mar, Calif. ) on a two-on-one break. Following an IceDiggers tally to open the second period, U.S. defenseman Sam Lofquist (Faribault, Minn.) blasted home a point-blank attempt in front of the Alpena net to give the U.S. a 2-1 lead. The Team USA lead stretched to two goals 5:42 later in the second period when Grant Scott (Sewickly, Pa.) snuck a shot past IceDigger goaltender Mike Jarboe.

The final frame was all IceDiggers as they tallied three goals from substained pressure in the USA end to earn the 4-3 victory.

USA Hockey hosts the 2006 Phantom Fireworks Four Nations Tournament next week at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube where the U.S. National Under-17 Team will face the top under-17 teams from Slovakia (Nov. 6), Russia (Nov. 7) and Switzerland (Nov. 9) in the week-long event.
