November 1, 2006 - North American Hockey League (NAHL) News Release
MINNEAPOLIS - Mahoning Valley Phantoms goaltender Ryan Zapolski was named the North American Hockey League's (NAHL) North Division Player of the Week for the week ending Oct. 29.
Zapolski, 19, turned aside 58 of 64 shots last weekend, backstopping the Phantoms to a pair of wins over North Division-leading Alpena (Mich.). On Friday, the Erie, Pa., native made 26 saves in Mahoning Valley's 5-3 win over the IceDiggers. The following night, Zapolski stopped 32 shots - and seven of nine in a shootout - as the Phantoms celebrated a 5-4 triumph.
"Ryan came out and gave us an opportunity to win both games with some big saves," said Phantoms head coach Bob Mainhardt.
A Mercyhurst College recruit, Zapolski has appeared in 13 games this season fashioning a 7-5-1 record to compliment a 3.60 goals-against average and a .890 save percentage.
The Phantoms open the home portion of their 2006-07 schedule this weekend when they host the Traverse City (Mich.) North Stars at the Ice Zone in Boardman, Ohio, on Friday and Saturday. Opening faceoff both nights is scheduled for 7 p.m.
