Washington Stealth News Release
EVERETT, Wash. - Think pink! With one in eight women developing breast cancer in her lifetime, the importance of a regular screening mammogram and the need to help those without insurance resources for preventative care can be life saving.
On Saturday, the Stealth is joining with Providence Comprehensive Breast Center in Everett to "Stick It To Breast Cancer" for its annual "Pink in The Rink" National Lacrosse League game.
Game time at Everett's Comcast Arena is 6:45 p.m. as the Stealth face West Division rival Calgary Roughnecks for a chance to secure its third post-season berth in four years.
"Pink in the Rink" is dedicated to generating awareness and support for the life-saving impact of breast cancer screening in the community says Washington Stealth owner Denise Watkins. In 2012, Pink in the Rink raised over $20,000 for Providence Breast Center's Free Mammogram Program.
For the Stealth, it's both a community passion and a personal battle.
"Breast cancer is the number one cause of death for women ages 40-45," said Watkins, whose sister is a six-year survivor and mother is 35 years past diagnosis and treatment.
With Washington state holding the fifth highest breast cancer rate in the U.S. and incidences of breast cancer in Snohomish and King Counties outpacing the state and national average, being diligent about having a regular mammogram can be a game changer.
"A screening mammogram can find breast cancer up to two years before it can be felt," Watkins said. "With early diagnosis, 92 percent of women will be alive in five years. It's truly life saving."
Watkins and the Stealth are encouraging fans to wear pink and think pink at Saturday night's game.
Among Saturday's "Pink in the Rink" activities are a jersey auction where fans can bid on the actual pink Stealth jerseys worn by players during Saturday's game, pink hair painting for kids and kids-at-heart, an exclusive post-game autograph session with Stealth players for jersey auction winners along with "Pink in the Rink" T-shirts and sun glasses for sale with profits benefiting Providence Breast Center's Free Mammogram Program for women in Snohomish County along with breast cancer treatment and diagnostics programs for non-insured and under-insured patients.
The Providence Comprehensive Breast Center is the largest center of its kind in the Puget Sound region performing over 13,000 screening mammograms in 2011.
