Rochester Brigade News Release
(Rochester, NY)-Following last week's 55 to 38 victory over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers, Rochester Brigade OS Martino Theus was named this season's âMost Valuable Player' by the fans of Rochester.
"I'm very proud of Martino, the award was well deserved," stated Head Coach Mark Saunders. "It was a great award to receive from the fans, but he's not finished yet... he'll get his name called more this year."
Theus is currently the league's top receiver with 135 catches for 1,490 yards and 17 touchdowns. Through 13 games this season, Theus leads the league in average receiving yards per game with 114.6 and leads the Brigade with 1,726 All-Purpose yards.
"Stats are not his main goal, he's a team player... he always puts the team first," commented Saunders.
Theus has done some amazing things this season, including shattering just about every Brigade receiving record. Theus currently holds the record for most pass receptions in a season with 135, most receptions in a game with 14 on three occasions, most yards gained with 1,490, most yards gained in a game with 195, most games (9) with 100 or more yards and most consecutive games (5; 4/27 to 5/24) with 100 or more yards.
"I feel like I deserve it for the most part, but it's more of a team award than an individual award," stated Theus.
With the numbers Theus has posted, he is currently up for âOffensive Player of the Year.' Theus is on pace to break the regular season af2 record of 148 receptions which was set last season by Wichita's Pascal Volz.
This week the Brigade travels to Roanoke to face the Steam on Saturday, July 6, where Theus will attempt to break the reception record, as he only needs 13 catches to tie and 14 to surpass the goal of 148. Catch all the action with JC DeLass on WASB 1590 AM, WRSB 1310 AM and WMJQ 105.5 FM.
