BAGGETT, ROSENBERGER HELP ROX REACH .500
Pittsfield, Mass. - East Bridgewater native Greg Baggett (Bentley) highlighted a seven-run rally in the fifth inning with a two-run homer to help the Brockton Rox take down the Pittsfield Suns, 9-2, at Wahconah Park on Sunday afternoon in Futures Collegiate Baseball League (FCBL) action.
With the win, Brockton (11-11) slides into a tie for fourth place in the FCBL standings with the Seacoast Mavericks, while Pittsfield (11-15) drops to eighth place.
Jonathan Rosenberger (Newberry) continued his run of quality starts for the Rox as he conceded just two runs on six hits, while walking none and striking out two in six innings of work. The right-hander improved his record to 2-0 on the season to go along with a pristine 1.75 ERA.
After Mike Lupia (Indiana University of Pennsylvania) belted a two-run triple in the second inning to draw first blood, Brockton exploded for seven more runs in the fifth to take a commanding, 9-0, lead.
A.J. Lardo (Maryland) kick-started the offensive barrage with a double that plated Mansfield's Rhett Wiseman (Vanderbilt) and Aaron Lupia (Indiana University of Pennsylvania). Baggett soon followed with a monstrous two-run blast that put the Rox up by six. Later in the inning, Aaron Lupia and Lardo each ripped RBI singles, while Mike Lupia scored on a bases-loaded hit by pitch to tack on three more runs for the visitors.
Pittsfield salvaged a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrifice fly from Brendan Slattery (Manhattan) and an RBI single from Jimmy Ricoy (UMass-Lowell), but it wasn't enough for the Suns, who couldn't overcome the seven-run deficit.
Baggett went 3-for-4 with a double, a homer, two RBIs, and two runs scored to lead the charge for the Rox. Meanwhile, Lardo continued to swing a hot bat for Brockton, going 2-for-5 with a double, two RBIs, and a run scored. Mike Lupia finished 2-for-3 with a triple, two RBIs, and a run scored, while twin brother Aaron added a pair of hits as well to go along with an RBI and a run scored.
