
The NECBL Daily Rundown - 7/23/22 - Mystic Inches Closer to Playoffs, Danbury Puts up 17

Mystic Schooners 7 - North Adams 4
W - Jake Noviello 1-2 (Fairfield): 5.2 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 3 K
L - Dan Galef 0-1 (Franklin & Marshall): 5.0 IP, 5 H, 3 ER (4 R), 4 BB, 1 K
Dodd Memorial Stadium in Norwich, C.T. - The Mystic Schooners (22-17) downed the North Adams SteepleCats (8-29) after scoring in four consecutive innings.
The Schooners kicked off the scoring in the bottom of the third through an Eddie Micheletti (George Washington) single. Mystic tacked on two more in the fourth thanks to a Logan Allen (Bryant) two-run bomb. Another run for the home team in the fifth and three in the sixth made it four straight innings with a score. RBIs from Logan Allen and Anthony Donofrio (Quinnipiac), along with an error, brought Mystic's total for the afternoon to seven.
After the Schooners scored the first four runs of the game, North Adams finally hit back in the top of the sixth. A Dixon Black (Monmouth) single put the SteepleCats on the board. After Mystic scored three more in the sixth to make it 7-1, North Adams added two in the seventh to cut the lead to 7-3. Ryan Galanie's (Wofford) two-run single gave the away team a glimmer of hope. The SteepleCats scored their final run in the top of the ninth through a Vincent Bianchina (Northwestern) single.
Despite losing, North Adams outhit Mystic eleven to eight. SteepleCats outfielder Vincent Bianchina led all batters with three hits. Schooners second baseman Logan Allen led all hitters with three RBIs.
Mystic returns to action following the All-Star break against North Shore (11-27) on July 26 at 6:30 p.m. North Adams' next game includes a trip to Upper Valley to face the Nighthawks (17-21) on July 25 at 6:00 p.m.
Newport Gulls 9 - Vermont Mountaineers 2
W - Peter Sakellaris 1-1 (Virginia Tech): 1 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 0 K
L - Christopher Kahler 2-1 (George Washington): 4.1 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K
Cardines Field in Newport, R.I. - The Newport Gulls (27-13) took down the Vermont Mountaineers (30-10) in a dominating performance.
After Newport's Chase Renner (Penn State) and Vermont's Christopher Kahler shut down the opposing offenses for the first, Newport scored the game's first run in the bottom of the fourth when Spencer Smith's (Northeastern) RBI double plated Alec Makarewicz (East Carolina) to make it 1-0. The Gulls doubled the lead in the fifth when Colton Ledbetter (Mississippi State) hit a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0. In the sixth, Newport scored seven runs, highlighted by back-to-back home runs from Ledbetter, Slate Alford (Mississippi State), and Noah Martinez (Central Connecticut State). Before that, Jacob Burley (Brown) scored on a passed ball, and Joshua Kuroda-Grauer (Rutgers) knocked a double that scored two. The Mountaineers responded in the top of the seventh with its first run of the game coming on a double from Shane Lussier (Wofford) to make it 9-1. Vermont continued to chip away in the eighth as a Nic Notarangelo (Endicott) double made it 9-2. That score stuck and Newport went into the all star break winners in ten of its previous thirteen.
After the all-star break, the Gulls will stay in Oak's Bluffs as they take on the Matha's Vineyard Sharks Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. The Mountaineers will return to Montpelier Recreation Field to face the Winnipesaukee Muskrats at 6:30 p.m. as they look to get back on track after dropping four in a row.
Danbury Westerners 17 - Ocean State Waves 4
W - Zach Grace 1-0 (Wake Forest): 6.0 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 5 K
L - Matthew Rowe 0-2 (Rutgers New Brunswick): 3.0 IP, 6 H, 9 ER, 5 BB, 1 K
Old Mountain Field in Kingston, R.I. - The Danbury Westerners (17-20) dominated for a 17-4 victory over the Ocean State Waves (20-20).
Khyree Miller (Winthrop) hit an RBI triple to put the Waves out in front 1-0 in the bottom of the first. After that, it was all Danbury.
In the top of the second inning, Billy Gerlott (Penn State) hit a solo home run to tie it up. Korey Morton (Connecticut) led off the top of the third inning with a single. Hank Thomas (Ohio State) hit a 2-run home run and Alex Stone (Duke) followed that up with a solo home run to make it 4-1. Nicholas Romano (Georgia Tech) hit a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to four.
In the fourth inning, Thomas took an RBI walk, then Stone hit an RBI single. Romano followed that up with a grand slam to make it 11-1. The grand slams did not stop there for Danbury. In the top of the seventh inning, Michael Becchetti (Fairfield) hit a grand slam to make it 15-3 in Danbury's favor.
The Westerners' next matchup will be on Tuesday at home against the Bristol Blues. The Waves will next be in action on Wednesday at home against the Martha's Vineyard Sharks.
Bristol Blues 4 - Upper Valley Nighthawks 2
W - Peter Ostensen 2-1 (Fairfield): 4.0 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 K
L - Aaron Munson 4-1 (Angelo St): 2.0 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
S - Brendan ODonnell 1-1 (Houston): 0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 0 K
Muzzy Field in Bristol, C.T. - The Bristol Blues (28-11) edged the Upper Valley Nighthawks (17-21) thanks to timely hitting.
All of Bristol and Upper Valley's runs came within a three-inning span. The Blues got things started in the bottom of the fourth through a Chaz Myers (Pacific) RBI single. The Nighthawks responded with two in the fifth to take the lead. A Tyler Sorrentino (Charleston) triple plated both Upper Valley runners. The one-run advantage was short lived, as a wild pitch and a Matt D. Smith (Bryant) single restored the Blues' lead. Bristol added an insurance run in the sixth after a Chaz Myers double. Myers had two RBIs and led both teams with three hits.
Five Blues relievers pitched five scoreless innings to cap off the victory. Jagger Duquette (Wagner), Cole Hanson (Seton Hall), Michael Thomas Morrissey (Bryant), Peter Phillips (Southern Connecticut St) and Brendan ODonnell (Houston) combined to give up just two hits and a walk over the course of the second half of the game.
Bristol heads to Danbury after the All-Star break to face the Westerners (17-20) on July 26 at 6:30 p.m. Upper Valley returns on July 25 at 6:00 p.m. against North Adams (8-29).
Winnipesaukee Muskrats 8 - Valley Blue Sox 4
W - Ryan Dee 1-1 (Hartford): 5.0 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 4 K
L - Jared Kuryan 1-1 (Western New England): 3.0 IP, 8 H, 7 ER, 1 BB, 4 K
Mackenzie Stadium in Holyoke, MA - The Winnipesaukee Muskrats (16-21) defeated the Valley Blue Sox (16-22) by the score of 8-4.
The Muskrats were on top almost immediately. In the first inning, Brendan Concannon (Paris JC) hit a single, then Patrick Roche (Boston College) hit an RBI single to put Winnepesaukee on the board. He was driven in on a Michael Borrelli (St. Anselm) RBI single to make it 2-0. They scored another run in the second inning, which preceded another rally from the Muskrats in the fourth inning. Patrick Roche led the inning off with a solo home run. Borrelli reached on a hit-by-pitch and was driven in on a Sebastian Mueller (Quinnipiac) 2-run home run. A fourth run was scored in the inning on a Kohl Abrams (North Carolina Asheville) RBI double. One inning later, the Muskrats added another run on a Borrelli sacrifice fly.
After going up 8-0, Winnipesaukee held on to the lead for the rest of the game. The pitching staff combined for 11 strikeouts and no walks.
The Muskrats' next game will be tomorrow when they host the North Shore Navigators at 6 p.m. The Blue Sox will next be on the road for a matchup with the Sanford Mainers tomorrow at 6:30 p.m.
