The Devil Rays get uptoned

August 7, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Southwest Michigan Devil Rays News Release

The Southwest Michigan Devil Rays fell to the South Bend Silver Hawks on Monday night at C.O. Brown by a score of 9-1. The Rays started out hot and led 1-0 but that all changed when Justin Upton decided that he was going to help his team.

The Rays were up 1-0 in the top of the fifth when things started to fall apart. The Silver Hawks loaded the bases for none other than Justin Upton. Upton, the number one overall draft pick in 2005, took the first good pitch he saw and blasted it into the seats in left field for a grand slam. Upton now has more home runs at C.O. Brown this season than anybody on the team except for J.T. Hall and Cesar Suarez. His three homers have combined for 11 RBI.

Greg Reinhard got the start for the Rays and played well until he was roughed up in the fifth. Reinhard struck out six batters and gave up five hits with four earned runs.

Cesar Suarez has continued to be outstanding for the Devil Rays. Monday night Cesar went 2-4 with one run scored. Both of his hits were doubles which now gives him 20 on the season. Christian Lopez went 2-4 for the Rays in the loss.

The Devil Rays and Silver Hawks will square off again on Tuesday as the Rays try to earn a split in the series. In addition to Red Hot Chicago Dime Dog night where hot dogs cost only 10 cents, it is Hispanic Night!! The Devil Rays will celebrate the Hispanic culture in Southwest Michigan by having the Tex-Mex band "Los Bandits" perform before and after the game. There will also be concessions specials such as $1 Tornados and $2 beer specials on Corona and Tecate.
