Burlington Bees News Release

Dayton, OH (August 7, 2006) Erik Cordier and Michael Penn combined to allow two hits and Mario Lisson had a season-high four hits, including two home runs, and drove in four to pace the Burlington Bees (18-27, 53-59) to a 9-0 win over the Dayton Dragons (23-21, 58-56) at Fifth Third Field tonight. The win snapped a six-game road losing streak and a streak of six straight losses to the Dragons.

Cordier (2-1) pitched a career-high seven innings and struck out a season-high six for the win. The Dragons got just one runner as far as second base against him. Penn returned to the mound for the first time since July 17th at Ft. Wayne. He's been battling stiffness in his right triceps. He walked two in the eighth, but struck out one and finished off the game to match the season mark for the fewest hits allowed in a game. Tonight was the Bees' third two-hitter of the season.

Lisson belted a solo homer in the first and another in the third against Dragons' starter Travis Wood. Lisson hadn't homered since July 1st, but now has nine for the year. He is the first Bees' player to have a multi-homer game this year and the team's first multi-homer game since Rusty Brown hit three against Beloit last year on June 29th at Community Field. Lisson finished with a career-high four hits, adding an RBI double in the sixth and an RBI single in the ninth. His four hits, two home runs, eleven total bases were all career bests and the four RBI tied his career high.

The Bees tacked on four more runs against Wood (9-3) to knock the left-hander out in the fourth. Brady Everett doubled and scored on a single by Jeremy Jirschele. After a strikeout, Valentino Arce hit a line drive down the right field line. Gerardo Cabrera raced after it and dove for the line, but missed and the ball rolled down into the corner. While Cabrera was slow to get up, Jirschele scored and Arce followed right on his heels for an inside-the-park home run. The hit extended Arce's hitting streak to a team-high twelve games and was the team's first inside-the-park home run since Kila Kaaihue in 2004. Arce finished with three hits and added another RBI in the seventh. Jirschele matched his season and career-high with three this and scored twice. The Bees finished with 16 hits in the game, two shy of their season-high. This was the Bees seventh shutout of the season. The nine-run victory was the team's largest winning margin in a shutout and the biggest since a 13-4 win at Cedar Rapids on June 4th.

The Bees and Dragons will wrap up this series tomorrow night at Fifth Third Field. The game starts at 6:00 Central time and the Bees will send RH Dan Cortes (1-0, 8.00) to the mound against RH Rafael Gonzalez (1-2, 7.47) for the Dragons. The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 5:40.
