The Denver Cutthroats Fall 5-4 in Double Overtime

Denver - The Denver Cutthroats faced off with the Allen Americans for the second game in the Ray Miron Presidents' Cup Finals on Saturday, May 3 at the Denver Coliseum. The Cutthroats fell to the Americans 5-4 in a double-overtime thriller, their first overtime loss of the postseason.

The Allen Americans took the lead in the opening frame. Jamie Schaafsma (Jonathon Zion) scored the first goal of the night to put the Americans up over the Cutthroats for the first time in the series. Jonathan Lessard (Zion, Steven Tarasuk) found a slot top shelf to extend Allen's lead 2-0. At the 17:15 mark, Robin Soudek (Cam Reid, J.P. Chabot) netted the Cutthroats first goal in the game to cut the deficit to one.

Garett Bembridge (Steve Kaunisto) tied the score at two with a shot to the back of the Americans net at the start of the second period. Linemate Troy Schwab (Lee Moffie) scored his eighth goal in the postseason to give the Cutthroats a 3-2 lead less than 30 seconds later.

The teams traded goals in the third period as Steven Tarasuk (Kale Kerbashian, Alex Lavoie) pulled the Americans even at three. Shortly after, Dan Barczuk (Sean Zimmerman, T.J. Fox) gave the Cutthroats a 4-3 lead after his shot from behind the net ricocheted off goaltender Bryan Pitton's back. With just over a minute remaining in regulation, Anthony Maiani (Zion, Schaafsma) scored the game-tying goal to send Game Two to overtime.

After a scoreless sudden-death overtime, the Denver Cutthroats headed to their first double-overtime of the postseason. Jamie Schaafsma (Tyler Ludwig) scored the game winner just 1:51 into the second overtime to knot the series at 1-1.
