November 20, 2009 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Boston Blazers News Release
BOSTON - The Boston Blazers will kick off their 2010 professional indoor lacrosse season this weekend when the team hosts open tryouts on Saturday, November 21 and Sunday, November 22, at Teamworks in Revere, Mass. This is the Blazers' second season in the National Lacrosse League (NLL) after finishing their inaugural campaign with a record of 10-6, tied for first place in the East Division.
The club has extended invites to its five draft selections from the 2009 NLL Entry Draft. Additional prospects hoping to earn a spot with the Blazers are invited to the two-day open tryout beginning at 5 p.m. on Saturday at Teamworks. Those players selected will be on the Blazers roster when the team opens training camp on Friday, December 4.
Among those competing for a roster spot and invited to attend include three top college midfielders selected by the Blazers in the entry draft: Max Seibald from Cornell University (Boston's first-round selection, 8th overall), and Syracuse University's Matt Abbott (2nd round, 20th overall) and Scott Kahoe (3rd round, 33rd overall). Additional 2009 draft choices in camp include Matt Messina from New York Institute of Technology (4th round, 38th overall) and Mike Stone of Middlebury College and Wellesley, Mass. (6th round, 59th overall). Other local players trying out for roster spots are Endicott College graduate forward John Ortolani, a Billerica, Mass. native; Hobart College graduate midfielder Matthew Smith of Cumberland, Rhode Island; and Fairfield University graduate midfielder Chris Ajemian of Duxbury, Mass.
"We feel that our top draft choice, Max Seibald, holds the potential to be an impact player and lead a talented draft class in this weekend's tryouts," said Boston Blazers President and General Manager Doug Reffue. "We feel that these rookies will help build upon our already strong nucleus of returning veterans to help take the Blazers to the next level in the NLL."
Returning veterans from their inaugural season include 2009 NLL MVP Dan Dawson, NLL All-Star defense Mitch Belisle, forward Brett Queener and NLL All-Star goaltender Anthony Cosmo, as well as forward Daryl Veltman, a two-time NLL Rookie of the Week and Rookie of the Month.
The team's full training camp will begin December 4 and run through the end of the month. The club will once again play their home games at the TD Garden and will open their season in early January. Tickets for all Blazers games are available at www.BlazersLacrosse.com or by calling 1-888-BLAZERS. Tickets are also available via Ticketmaster and at the TD Garden Box Office.
