
Thatcher leads Spartans to win in WIFL opener

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Brandon Thatcher threw for 243 yards and five touchdowns while rushing for two more to lead the Augusta Spartans to a 49-47 victory over the Daytona Beach Thunder in the inaugural World Indoor Football League game Sunday afternoon at DBCC Public Broadcasting 15 Field at the Ocean Center.
Marvin Stone (8 catches for 110 yards) and Anthony Young (6-111) each caught two touchdown passes as the Spartans scored two unanswered touchdowns to turn a 32-31 deficit into a 43-32 lead.
Daytona Beach closed to 49-47 on Bo Bartik's 17-yarder with 7:21 remaining and had a chance to win, but Jaye Tyroff's field goal was blocked by Voncellis Allen.
Bartik finished with 195 yards and six touchdown passes, five to Blake Broadhurst.
Augusta plays next at Osceola Feb. 24, while Daytona Beach hosts the Columbus Lions Feb. 26.
