The Texas Revolution of the Indoor Football League proudly announced today the hiring of the team's new Head Coach and Director of Football Operations in Chris Williams. A longtime veteran of the professional football coaching ranks, Williams will enter his thirteenth straight season as a coach in indoor/arena football. Most recently, he lead the New Mexico Stars to a 2013 playoff spot in the Lone Star Football League missing the championship game by just a few points. Prior, he served as the head coach of the IFL's Odessa Roughnecks where he earned more wins than any other coach in the first five years of the league's history. Stints in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and Birmingham with Arena Football League teams offered Williams experience earlier in his career. Williams is recognized in the national football community as a great recruiter and a specialist at promoting players to the next level. "Our inaugural season brought us a stream of successes including an opportunity to gain stability in our community. As we move forward however, we are determined to serve with excellence in every area. With the challenges of our 'start-up' behind us, this is the first step towards that excellence. I have great confidence in Chris Williams and his abilities which I have seen firsthand." stated Revs President and CEO Tommy Benizio.
During his time with the New Mexico Stars, fate thrust him into an ownership position with the team while the Stars were competing in the IFL. Williams acquired the teams stock from its founders, leading him into a dual role handling duties for both the business off the field and the team on the field. It was in Odessa however, that he earned his greatest success and built his strongest friendship in the football business. While partnered up with then Roughnecks team owner Benizio, Williams earned an overall record of 50-22, a league championship, an undefeated regular season, and a one-time professional football record of 27 straight regular season wins. The arrival of Williams to the Revolution is a family reunion of sorts as he has not only worked with Benizio in Odessa, but also team Vice Presidents Barney Welch and Charlie Hildbold. "I am thrilled to be returning to Texas in such a great community, and to be teamed up with a staff that I believe is amongst the best in indoor football," explained Williams, "I feel confident that we will be poised to contend for a championship each season starting in 2014". Williams plans to begin contacting Revolution and other players this week to talk about playing for the team next season.
With a first year record of 5-9 on the field, and in the opinion of team owners, a noticeable lack of leadership for the team off the field, the owners felt that a change needed to be made. In a stroke of good fortune, Williams happened to be transitioning away from the New Mexico team and was available immediately to move back to Texas. In conjunction with the teams commitment to stability and long-term success, it was decided that Williams' contract be a three-year agreement and be for a year-round position which is rare in the industry. "Chris is not only capable as a general on the field, but because he brings so much more to the table in his experience as a former team owner and operator, we look forward to great contributions from him in the front office and business development efforts." stated Charlie Hildbold.
Coach is joined by his wife Tosha, a school teacher who plans to work for an elementary school in Plano, his sons C. J. (16) and Devon (4), and his daughter Skyler (9).
