Tensions Flare as Broncos Fall in Brandon

Brandon, Man. - A 1:14 second span to start the second period sunk the Swift Current Broncos (6-10-2-1) Tuesday night in an 8-2 loss to the Brandon Wheat Kings (8-10-0-0).
Brandon opened the scoring 5:54 into the game as Riley Ginell saw his first two shots blocked by Broncos defenceman, but was able to get his third shot past the glove of Isaac Poulter from the slot.
Swift Current tied the game on a penalty shot just over five minutes later. After Josh Filmon was hooked on a breakaway, Filmon was awarded the penalty shot and made no mistake, beating Ethan Kruger over the blocker to tie the game.
The Wheat Kings quickly regained momentum as Nolan Ritchie was able to lift the stick of Rylan Thiessen while chasing him down and firing a shot past Poulter just 1:19 after Filmon's goal.
Brandon then extended their lead to 3-1 on a power play with a tic-tac-toe passing play as Ritchie slid the puck across the crease for Marcus Kallionkieli who tapped it in with five minutes to play in the first.
Swift Current thought they had cut into Brandon's lead with 1:24 to go in the period, but the play was reviewed and the goal taken back due to it being kicked in from the crease.
The Wheat Kings blew the game open with three goals in 1:14 to start the second period, jumping out to a 6-1 lead. Reid Dyck replaced Poulter in net following the fifth goal.
After Ridly Greig scored his second of the game a little over the halfway mark of the game, Brady Birnie stopped the bleeding for Swift Current by taking a pass from Rylan Gould and sneaking a partial break through the five hole of Kruger to cut the lead to 7-2.
Fireworks occurred often over the course of the game but especially in the third period as five fights broke out over the final 20 minutes. In total, 116 penalty minutes were handed out between the two teams.
Brandon added a power play goal late in regulation for the 8-2 final score.
The Broncos look to have a short memory as they head to Winnipeg to play the league-leading ICE (19-1-0-0) Wednesday night.
