
Ten-Run Sixth Crushes Bears

NEWARK, NJ - August 3, 2007 - In the top of the sixth inning, the Somerset Patriots sent 14 batters to the plate scoring ten runs on eight hits to break a 2-2 tie en route to defeating the Newark Bears 16-3 in front of 4,077 fans Friday evening at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium. Despite the loss, the Bears still remain in second place in the North Division with a 10-10 second half record.
In the top of the sixth inning, Patriots third baseman Jose Morban hit two RBI doubles and catcher Travis Anderson hit a two-run double. Anderson, shortstop Pat Boran, second baseman Teuris Olivares, and left-fielder Jason Romano each added RBI singles in the inning.
Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning, Bears second baseman Javier Colina hit an RBI double, and first baseman Victor Rodriguez hit a sacrifice-fly to tie the game. Colina finished the game 2-for-3 including a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth for his team-leading 20th of the season. Rodriguez ended the night 1-for-3 extending his hitting streak to 16 games tying the team high for 2007.
For the Patriots, Morban went 3-for-6 with three runs scored and three RBI, while Anderson ended 3-for-3 with one run scored and three RBI.
Carlos Mirabal (8-6) took the loss allowing eight runs on 12 hits in 5.1 innings pitched, while Sam Marsonek (4-7) earned the victory surrendering two runs on four hits in six innings pitched.
The Bears and Patriots will continue the three-game series with game two Saturday evening at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium with first pitch scheduled for 6:05 PM. Gates open at 5:05 PM to Mascot Night featuring a dodgeball giveaway (First 1,000 children (14 and under) presented by Sportscare Institute. All fans in attendance will be treated to a mascot dodgeball game in celebration of Bears mascot Rip âN Ruppert's 9th birthday party.
