Muskegon Lumberjacks News Release
MUSKEGON, Michigan (March 26th) - With the recent announcement of the 16-team field for the 2015 NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Tournament slated to begin this weekend, the Muskegon Lumberjacks have ten former players representing nine different schools vying for an opportunity to skate in the Frozen Four beginning on April 9th from the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts, hosted by the Hockey East Association.
The overall number one seed in this year's tournament went to Minnesota State University featuring defenseman Carter Foguth (2010-13). The Mavericks, who captured the WCHA Regular Season and Tournament Championship, are the top seed in the Midwest Region and play Atlantic Hockey Champion R.I.T. on Saturday in South Bend, Indiana. This season, Foguth totaled three goals and six assists in 39 games during his sophomore campaign and also skated in 151 career games as a Lumberjack amassing 3 goals and 12 assists.
The other side of the region pits second-seeded at-large bid Nebraska-Omaha going up against third-seeded ECAC Tournament Champion Harvard. Skating for the Mavericks of Nebraska-Omaha is Luc Snuggerud (2013-14), who appeared in three games for Muskegon tallying one goal and two assists. The Chicago Blackhawks prospect has amassed 2 goals and 12 assists in 36 games as a freshman this season.
Boston University, Hockey East's Regular Season and Tournament Champion, holds the number one seed in the Northeast Regional that includes Doyle Somerby (2012-13), a 2012 draft pick of the New York Islanders. In ten games with Muskegon, Somerby netted two goals before playing collegiately for the Terriers, where the defenseman has dished out five assists during his sophomore campaign.
The Terriers skate against the fourth-seeded Bulldogs of Yale University on Friday in Manchester, New Hampshire. Yale, an at-large selection to the tournament, includes freshman Adam Larkin (2013-14), who accumulated 3 goals and 12 assists in 59 games during his Lumberjacks stint. The defenseman has totaled a goal plus six assists through 32 games in his first collegiate season.
The Northeast Regional fills out with at-large number two seed Minnesota-Duluth clashing with Michael Brodzinski (2011-13) and the third-seeded Golden Gophers of the University of Minnesota, who claimed the Big Ten Conference's Regular Season and Tournament Championships. The San Jose Sharks prospect appeared in 67 games as a Lumberjack registering 16 goals and 18 assists. In his sophomore year, Brodzinski has recorded four goals and ten assists in 35 games.
In the East Regional, the NCHC Tournament Champion Miami RedHawks earn the top spot that includes freshman Conor Lemirande (2012-13) on the team. The forward skated in a pair of contests with the Lumberjacks a few seasons ago and has notched a goal and two assists in 35 games with the RedHawks. Miami battles with at-large number four seed Providence on Saturday in Providence, Rhode Island.
Number two seed and at-large bid Denver University squares off against Adam Gilmour (2012-13) and the at-large third-seeded Boston College Eagles in the other East Regional contest. Gilmour, the Minnesota Wild draft pick in 2012, led the Lumberjacks in scoring during the organization's third USHL season with 48 points (20 goals, 28 assists) in 67 games played. This season with the Eagles, the sophomore forward has registered 9 goals and 17 assists in 37 games.
Rounding out the tournament in the West Regional is the top seed in at-large bid the University of North Dakota taking on another at-large selection in fourth-seeded Quinnipiac on Friday in Fargo, North Dakota. The winner of that game takes on the winner of the matchup between two more at-large schools both nicknamed the Huskies in second-seeded Michigan Tech and third-seeded St. Cloud State.
Michigan Tech has two former Lumberjacks in Chris Leibinger (2011-13) and Tyler Heinonen (2011-13) on the roster. Leibinger played in 35 games with Muskegon tallying four goals and six assists, while Heinonen compiled 64 points (36 goals, 28 assists) in 91 games during his Lumberjacks tenure. Both are in their sophomore seasons with Leibinger distributing three goals and five assists in 37 games and Heinonen totaling 14 goals and 9 assists through 30 games.
St. Cloud State holds sophomore defenseman Ben Storm (2012-13), who spent 55 games with Muskegon notching a pair of goals plus ten assists. Currently, the Colorado Avalanche prospect has netted a pair of goals to go with three assists in 31 games this season.
