TAMPA, Fla. - For the first time this season, the Tampa Yankees (15-9) lost after leading in the ninth inning. The Brevard County Manatees (6-18) scored three run in their final at-bat to win, 4-2, and take the series on Sunday afternoon at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
The Yankees fell to 14-1 when leading after eight innings.
Josh Rogers tossed a quality start in his High-A debut with Tampa. The southpaw held the 'Tees to one run on seven hits and a walk in seven innings, striking out seven batters in a no-decision.
Tampa took an early 2-0 lead against Brevard County starter Eric Hanhold. Jorge Mateo struck out, but reached on a wild pitch and a throwing error by catcher Dustin Houle in the first. Mark Payton singled to center and advanced on a bobble by Johnny Davis, placing runners at second and third. Billy Fleming drove in Mateo with a single and Payton scored, two batters later, on a sacrifice fly by Abiatal Avelino.
Hanhold held the Yankees scoreless throughput the rest of his outing. The right-hander tossed six and two-third innings, allowing two unearned runs on six hits and a walk. Hanhold tied a season-high with seven strikeouts.
The Manatees cut their deficit in half with a run in the second. Fidel Pena doubled and scored on a base hit by Taylor Brennan, making it a 2-1 game.
LHP Caleb Frare tossed a scoreless eighth inning for Tampa, working around an infield single and striking out a pair.
The score remained the same into the ninth and the Yankees brought in closer RHP Matt Marsh (BS, 1)(L, 0-1).
Brennan struck out and reached on a wild pitch with one out. Pinch-hitter Dustin DeMuth singled into center off the out-stretched glove of second baseman Vicente Conde. Brandon Diaz lined a single to left and Brennan beat a play at the plate, tying the game. After a bloop single by Davis, DeMuth scored on a wild pitch. Diaz crossed the plate on a groundout by Angel Ortega before the inning ended.
RHP Tyler Spurlin retired Tampa in order in the ninth, earning his fourth save.
LHP Brad Kuntz (1-0) earned the win in relief for Brevard County, striking out two and retiring all four batters he faced.
Payton (3-for-3, R) recorded his third three-hit game of the season. Fleming (1-for-4, RBI) tallied his 12th RBI of the season. Mateo (0-for-3, R) left the game in the seventh inning.
Up next, the Yankees take on the Clearwater Threshers in a six-game series beginning Monday at 7:00 p.m. in Tampa. RHP Joey Maher (1-0, 2.63 ERA) is slated to make his first start of the season for the T-Yanks. RHP Will Morris (1-1, 3.07 ERA) is scheduled to throw for Clearwater.
