Adirondack Phantoms News Release
Hundreds of Philadelphia-area business leaders converge at Wachovia Center for an indoor block party, interactive games, celebrity appearances, and a rally to raise money and awareness for United Way on Monday, September 15 from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. The event is by invitation only. Comcast Corporation President Brian L. Roberts and Executive Vice President David L. Cohen are co-chairing this year's United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania annual campaign and co-chairing this Tip-Off event along with United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania President Christine James-Brown.
Comcast, who through its subsidiary Comcast-Spectacor, owns and operates the Philadelphia Flyers, the Philadelphia 76ers and the arena in which the teams play, is hosting the event at the Wachovia Center. The event features appearances by new 76ers coach Randy Ayers and Flyers coach Ken Hitchcock, mascot appearances, dance team members, interactive games from each of the Philly teams and a chance to shoot a puck on a goalie or take a shot on the 76ers court.
The United Way Tip-Off event emphasizes the needs for donors and volunteers to continue to help children, lead adults to self-sufficiency, and promote healthy living to create a stronger future for our region.
"It's important for companies, as well as individuals, to support organizations such as United Way," said Roberts. "At Comcast, we are committed to helping and we will do our part to encourage our employees and our business associates to do their part to help this wonderful cause."
"This year's United Way campaign has an aggressive, yet obtainable, goal of $53 million," added Cohen. "As difficult an economic time as the last few years have been, we need the collective energy of corporations, individuals and the entire community to reach this ambitious goal."
"I'd like to thank Comcast for spearheading this year's campaign, and for kicking it off in such a wonderful way. I'd also like to thank the donors who, year after year, help create positive and lasting changes in our community," said United Way President and CEO, Chris James-Brown.
Through United Way's annual campaign in 2002-03, 6,300 children were able to receive preschool education, and 144,000 children and youth attended programs during non-school hours. United Way helped place 11,700 individuals and families in emergency shelters, and connected 61,000 elderly neighbors to organizations that provide services so they could remain in their own homes and out of nursing homes. United Way believes that what matters is changing peoples lives â giving children a better chance to succeed in school, providing families more tools to become self-sufficient, and offering older adults a better quality of life.
United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania (UWSEPA), established in 1921, is one of Greater Philadelphia's largest non-profit organizations and one of approximately 1,400 affiliated United Ways nationwide. Each United Way is independent, separately incorporated, and governed by local volunteers.
United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania leads, inspires, and mobilizes donors and volunteers to help provide solutions to essential health and human service issues and improve the quality of people's lives in the community.
