Knoxville Smokies News Release

SEVIERVILLE, Tenn.- The Tennessee Smokies took advantage of two Carolina Mudcats miscues in the bottom of the fourth inning to take away a 2-0 victory on Friday night at Smokies Park.

Starting pitchers Adam Bass of the Smokies and Anibal Sanchez of the Mudcats dueled through the first three innings before Tennessee capitalized in the fourth inning on two errors by Carolina infielders.

Shortstop Alberto Gonzalez led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a ground ball to first base that went under Mudcats' first baseman Ryan Bear's glove to give the Smokies a lead-off base runner. After catcher Miguel Montero flied out to left field, Smokies first baseman Jesus Cota laced a single up the middle to put runners on first and second base with one out.

Third baseman Agustin Murillo followed Cota with a ball down the line that third baseman fielded cleanly and went to second base to try and force out Cota but Mudcats' second baseman Kevin Randel missed the ball allowing Gonzalez to score.

Recent addition Phil Avlas took the next offering from Sanchez and blasted the ball into left-center field to bring home Cota and give the Smokies a 2-0 advantage. Avlas was recently added to the Tennessee roster after utility man Matt Morgan was placed on the disabled list following his collision with Gonzalez in Birmingham.

With the rain beginning to fall in the top-half of the fifth inning Smokies starter Bass worked quickly; the 6-foot-6 Alabama native retired the Mudcats' in order before play was suspended due to rain.

Despite the game being an official game, the Tennessee Smokies will honor all tickets from Friday night's game as a "rain check" due to the cancellation of the night's fireworks show.

The Smokies resume their series with Carolina on Saturday night at 7:15 p.m. at Smokies Park. The fireworks show will be shot off on Saturday night in addition to the Smokies regularly scheduled promotion of 2006 poster schedule giveaway.
