Topeka Tarantulas News Release
[TOPEKA, K.S.] - The Topeka Tarantulas of the Central Hockey League (CHL) announced today that the club has signed defenseman Chris Brannen. Brannen, a 6'2" 205 pound defenseman, from Brampton, Ontario played the last three seasons with St.-Francis Xavier University of the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS). In those three seasons (2001/02-2003/04), Brannen had five points and 14 penalty minutes in 60 games played.
"I am excited for him [Brannen]. He is a solid player that should be a top four defenseman by Christmas time." Head Coach Joe Coombs added, "He will be a solid player, not only this season, but for a long time here in Topeka."
Prior to St.-Francis Xavier University, Brannen played two seasons (1999/00-2000/01) with Kitchener Rangers of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), where he tallied 52 points and had 69 penalty minutes in 95 games played. Brannen's hockey resume also includes UMass-Amherst (NCAA Division I), where he played two seasons from 1998/99-1999/00.
"This is a great opportunity for me. I am extremely impressed with the staff in Topeka and am impressed with the type of team they want to build." Brannen added on what the Tarantula fans can expect, "I am a steady defenseman that takes care of my own end. You're not going to see anything too flashy from my style of play, but I am also not afraid to jump in to the mix every now and then."
Season tickets and mini-plans for the 2004-2005 season are now available. Contact the Tarantulas office at (785) 235-9466 for more information.
