Tampa, Fla. - The Tampa Yankees (12-8) and the St. Lucie Mets (9-12) played in a double header tonight at George M. Steinbrenner Field. The T-Yanks won both games: 4-2 and 1-0.
In the second game, Tampa's starter, Jose Ramirez struck out seven batters and was followed by Branden Pinder to no-hit the Mets in 7 innings. Ramirez, who threw six innings, improved his record to 3-4 with 3.39 ERA, while Pinder picked up his fourth save of the season. The last no-hitter by a Tampa Yankees pitching staff was thrown on July 27, 2007, by Daniel McCutcheon (starter) and Jose Veras in seven innings.
The only run of the nightcap was scored in the bottom of the fifth, when Kyle Roller led off the inning with a double and Anderson Feliz followed with a single to score Roller.
The early game had Nik Turley (4-3, 3.21 ERA) starting on the mound for Tampa against St. Lucie's Chase Huchingson (5-6, 4.44 ERA). The T-Yanks took an early lead in the bottom of the first when they had the bases loaded. Kyle Roller singled to score two runners, followed by a double from Zach Wilson scoring one more for a 3-0 lead. The Mets scored their first run in the fourth and then again in the sixth. They failed to score after Tampa closer, Mark Montgomery, struck out three batters in the seventh to earn his 13th save of the season and seal the win.
The Tampa Yankees and St. Lucie Mets will play game three of their four game series Friday, July 13th at 7:00pm. Fans can enjoy $1 soda, $10 all-you-can-eat chicken wings and select drink specials on the Tampa Tribune Deck from 6-8:00pm.
