Tampa Yankees News Release
TAMPA, Fla. -- The Tampa Yankees (35-19) squeaked by the Charlotte Stone Crabs (28-28) with a 2-1 victory, taking the series-opener and earning a seventh consecutive win on Friday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
RHP Will Carter took a no-decision in his first quality start with Tampa. Carter held Charlotte to one run on five hits in six innings, striking out three. The 23-year-old had no walks and threw 53 of his 71 pitches for strikes.
A two-out rally in the first gave the Yankees an early lead. Miguel Andujar drew a four-pitch walk and advanced to second on a bloop single by Matt Snyder. A base hit to center by Thairo Estrada allowed Andujar to cross the plate.
RHP Chris Pike allowed one run on seven hits in six innings for Charlotte. Pike walked two and struck out two, throwing 62 of his 96 pitches for strikes.
The Stone Crabs tied the score in the fourth with a trio of hits. Andrew Velazquez and Mac James hit back-to-back, one-out singles. Cade Gotta doubled into the left field corner, scoring Velazquez. James tried to score on the play, but a relay throw by Jorge Mateo retired him at the plate.
Mateo used his speed to help Tampa take back the lead in the seventh. The 20-year-old singled, stole second and reached third on an errant throw by the catcher James. Abiatal Avelino then drove in Mateo with a single to center, giving the Yankees a 2-1 lead.
RHP Matt Marsh (W, 4-1) retired all six batters he faced in the sixth and seventh innings, striking out four. RHP Dillon McNamara (SV, 3) worked around a leadoff walk in a scoreless ninth, striking out two.
Estrada (1-for-3, RBI) and Austin Aune (2-for-4) extended their hitting streaks to eight games. Mateo (2-for-4, R,2 SB) recorded his 17th multi-hit game and leads the league with 19 stolen bases. Snyder (2-for-4) has three consecutive multi-hit games to begin his season.
