Talons Top Coaches Poll For Fifth Straight Week

April 23, 2008 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release

CHICAGO - The defending ArenaCup Champion Tulsa Talons have maintained the No. 1 ranking in the Week 5 Coaches Poll, the arenafootball2 (af2) league office announced today. Tulsa collected 445 of a possible 448 points and 26-of-29 first place votes in securing the top position for the fifth consecutive week. The Talons (4-0) continued their strong start to the 2008 season with a convincing 70-34 win on Saturday against Central Division and in-state rival Oklahoma City.

The Spokane Shock (3-0, 408 points, 2 first place votes) maintained their hold on the No. 2 spot for the fourth straight week after resting through a bye week in Week 4. Florida (3-0, 392 points, 1 first place vote) stayed strong at No. 3 after a 55-26 road win on Sunday over new South Division and in-state rival Daytona Beach. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton is a new addition to the Top-5. The Pioneers (3-1, 345 points) enter Week 5 tied at No. 4 overall with Lubbock. Bolstered by the return of QB Ryan Vena, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton looked impressive in a 74-26 road win at Peoria. The Renegades (3-0, 345 points) stayed unbeaten with a 48-46 victory over Texas. Heading into Week 5, the most anticipated matchup has to be Saturday night's Central Division showdown in Lubbock between the No.4-ranked Renegades and the top-ranked Tulsa Talons.

Each week during the season af2 coaches will vote for the Top 16 teams in the league by ranking them one through 16 on a ballot. Teams ranked first receive 16 points with the point value decreasing by one for each place below first, meaning a team ranked 16th would receive one point. Total points will determine the Top 16 list. In the event of a tie in total points, the team with the greater number of first-place votes will be ranked higher. The af2 Coaches Poll will be announced every Wednesday during the regular season. Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own team and the poll results have no bearing on postseason qualification.

The complete Top 16 is listed below. The number in parentheses indicates the number of first place votes the team received.
