Meet the MAINEiac - Sam Finn, D, #6

Welcome back from the San Jose Sharks rookie camp! Tell us a little bit about that experience.

It was an awesome experience. I had the chance to practice with great players but also to play against other great players, because we had a rookie tournament.

The games were in Penticton, BC, right? How does BC compare to your home province PQ?

I can't even compare Penticton, BC to Quebec. It is completely different. In Penticton you are surrounded with mountains and forest. In Quebec you are surrounded with houses - I preferred BC.

What can you tell us about your own family?

My family is very close - we are also friends. I have two brothers, one older and one younger, that I hang out with all the time back home.

What's it like having your dad coach for the Maineiacs this year?

It's great, because that way I get to see him more. While practicing, I see him as a coach rather than my father.

You missed the Quebec and Chicoutimi games for rookie camp, but what does it mean to the guys to play against former teammates?

Playing against old teammates adds a challenge to it, because all summer you've been telling them that you will beat them and after the game you want to be the one smiling at him.

What does being Assistant Captain mean to you?

Being assistant captain means that I'm an example on and off the ice. I also have to make sure everyone sticks together all the time.

For road games, how do you pass time on the bus?

On the bus I like to watch movies or listen to music. What do you like to do for fun? For fun I like to play other sports with my friends like football, volleyball...I also love to play paintball.

MAINEiacs To Donate 1000 Tickets to YWCA Fund Drive Friday Night!

The Lewiston MAINEiacs understand what civic responsibility means in supporting those public entities that have fallen on difficult times. The YWCA of Central Maine has been an important fixture in the Lewiston/Auburn area for many years, with the numerous programs that are offered to the community. In light of the YWCA's budget situation, the MAINEiacs will present 1000 tickets to the organization that they can sell as they wish in order to help them raise the funds they need to keep them in the area for well into the future!

The Billet Experience - Gary & Elaine Hemmingway

Gary and Elaine Hemingway were never really hockey fans, that is, until the MAINEiacs came to town. They were quickly hooked and even traveled to Vancouver to watch our boys compete for the Memorial Cup! It was that experience and talking with some of the boys parents and billets that made that trip that they wanted to be a unique part of every major junior hockey player's career. And they became a billet family for the Lewiston MAINEiacs. Being a billet family requires providing a true home away from home for these young men who are pursuing their dream. It is also an important part of their success.

Gary and Elaine have been privileged to welcome into their home players like Max Gratchev, Adrien Lemay, Sebastian Trudeau, Sam Finn, and Dillon Fournier. It is not uncommon that they actually have two players living in their home at the same time. This year they welcome Sam Finn and Dillon Fournier. Elaine says with a smile, "They entertain each other and make being away from home easier." Gary and Elaine still stay in close contact with their players and their families and often visit a couple times a year.

The Hemmingway's also have a son and daughter-in-law, Chris and Jen and their children Taylor and Nick, who don't miss a beat when it comes to MAINEiacs hockey! They are also true fans and have billeted for the past couple training camps. At the end of the day, Elaine's advice to anyone who would like to be a billet is... try it for training camp. There is no doubt that it is a commitment, cooking, cleaning, and being a back up parent when they need one. Elaine says, "to see these boys realize their dreams- there are no words/emotions to explain the smiles on their faces or their happiness."

Gary and Elaine enjoy following the team on the road also. They've been to many rinks in Canada but the one that stands out most is Quebec because it is a production similar to that of the NHL. It also carries fond memories of us defeating Quebec in their barn with Adrien in net last year in front of 20,000 (quickly quieted) fans.

Gary and Elaine are looking forward to a great season and exciting hockey this year. And next, the Memorial Cup? They're hoping so!
